Google founders donate to Wikipedia

While Wikileaks is difficult to get funding for its operations because it is considered dangerous, other Wiki sites lucky to get donations. Wikimedia, the organization that manages the site gets funding encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Donations came from one of Google's founders Sergey Brin. Funds amounting to USD 500 thousand, in donated Sergey through The Brin Wojcicki Foundation, charitable organization which he founded together with his wife Anne Wojcicki.

This contribution is not sufficient to meet the annual budget for Wikipedia operations of $ 28.3  million. However, this contribution is very meaningful to Wikimedia.

"This grant is an important support for the Wikimedia Foundation and its operations. I hope this will melesatkan annual fundraising campaign to Wikipedia this year," said Sue Gardner as Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, as reported by News Factor and quoted by Chexosnews, Sunday (20/11 / 2011).

"This is how Wikipedia works: people use them, they liked it and they help finance its operations for this site to remain free anyone around the world. We are very thankful to Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki because it supports what we do," he explained.

This week, Wikipedia launch its annual fundraising campaign. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales remains the main attraction of this campaign. In addition to echoing the campaign, Wales also continually reminded that Wikipedia would not display ads.

"Commerce is fine. Advertising is not something evil. But we do not have it here. There will never be in Wikipedia," Wales said.

That is why, each year hold Wikipedia fundraising campaign. Last year, the campaign managed to raise USD 16 million. Based on the latest data from comScore, Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world with over 470 unique visitors every month.
